אַחֲרָאִי, אַחֲרָיִי m. (foreg. wds.) prop. designated to step behind, substitute; hence, he who (or that which) is gone back to, obligated, pledged; surety, guarantor. — Pl. אַחֲרָאִים, אַחֲרָיִין. Dem. III, 5 אין אנו א׳ וכ׳ we are not responsible for deceivers. Pes. IX, 9 אינן אחראין זה לזה they are not responsible to one another (need not care for each other). Y. Keth. VIII, end, 32ᵇ, a. fr. כל נכסיו א׳ all his landed property is pledged for &c.
