בַּדַּאי m. (בדי I) 1) liar, misrepresenting. Snh. 89ᵇ (prov.) כך עונשו של ב׳ וכ׳ such is the punishment of the liar &c.; Ab. d’R. Nath. ch. XXX; Gen. R. s. 94 מה טיבו של ב׳ הזה; v. טִיב. Kidd. 49ᵃ he who translates a Bible verse literally (v. צורה), הרי זה ב׳ is a liar (misrepresenting the sense). —2) invention, fiction. Deut. R. s. 5, a. fr. דברים של ב׳ fictitious words (mitigating the original report); ib. דברי ב׳.—Pl. בַּדָּאִים, בַּדָּאִין. Y. Gitt. IV, 46ᵃ bot. נמצאו הדברים ב׳ things turned out to be false. B. Bath. 74ᵃ; Snh. 110ᵃ; 110ᵇ Moses and his laws are true והן ב׳ and they (euphem. for we) are liars. Tosef. Keth. II, 1 ב׳ אנו (ed. Zuck. מבודין) we have been telling a falsehood.
