Jastrow: גֶּזַע

גֶּזַע m. (b. h.; preced.) trunk, stem, stump; that which grows out of the trunk, shoot. B. Bath. V, 4 העולה מן הג׳ whatever shoots out of the trunk, opp. שרשים; defined ib. 82ᵃ כל שרואה … מן הג׳ whatever sees (when shooting) the light of day is ‘from the geza’ (and belongs to the owner of the tree). Ib. דקל אין לו ג׳ a date tree has no geza, i.e. the purchaser of a date tree has no claim on shoots growing out of the trunk; ib. אין לו ג׳ לבעל הדקל לפי שאין לו ג׳ Ms. M. (ed. שאין מוציא ג׳, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) the owner … has no claim &c., because the stump of a date-tree has no shoots. Ib. 80ᵇ אין גִּזְעָן מחליף their stump grows no new shoots.
