הֲבָרָה f. (הבר, cmp. הֲבִירָא; Neo-Syr. הברא P. Sm. 1185 bot.) 1) confused sound (contrad. to tune), noise. Yoma 19ᵇ כדי שישמע … קול ה׳ that the Highpriest might hear the reverberating noise (of people awake at night). R. Hash. III, 7 ואם קול ה׳ וכ׳ but if he heard only an indistinct sound (echo, opp. קול שופר). —2) report, rumor. Y. Dem. I, 22ᵃ נפלה ה׳ בעיר the report spread in town. Y. R. Hash. IV, 59ᵇ bot. נפלה ה׳ וכ׳ an alarm spread. Gitt. 89ᵃ שמעו קול ה׳ they heard only an indistinct rumor (gossip). Gen. R. s. 10; a. fr. [In modern Hebrew ה׳ syllable.]
