חַיִּים m. pl. (b. h.; חָיָה) life, support; health. Sabb. 33ᵇ חַיֵּי עולם everlasting life (future world), ח׳ שעה temporary life (physical wants).—חיי נפש necessaries of life. Y. Ned. IX, 42ᶜ the support of the poor of one’s own place. Pes. 113ᵇ חַיֵּיהֶם אינם חיים whose life is no life (deserving the name); a. v. fr.—חַיֶּיךָ, בְּחַ׳ by thy life!, as thou livest! Lev.
