The Responsibility

Find the right opportunities and build the applications to pursue them.

The Grant Writer provides the specialized research and proposal development capacity behind Berean's grant efforts. The role requires the ability to understand a complex organization, identify credible funding matches, and turn institutional substance into persuasive applications.

This is not generic fundraising copy. The work is to understand what Berean has actually built, identify where there is genuine alignment with a funder's priorities, and present that fit accurately, credibly, and persuasively.

Location

Remote. Work and meetings take place online. No routine travel or in-person attendance is required. Any exception will be stated in the opportunity and agreed before you accept. Please review any location or work-eligibility requirements listed for this particular role.

Grant Development Scope

Carry the specialized work from opportunity research through submission tracking.

Grant research

Research foundations, institutions, programs, and other potential grant opportunities relevant to Berean's work.

Opportunity identification

Evaluate potential opportunities for alignment, eligibility, timing, requirements, and realistic fit before substantial application work begins.

Proposal writing

Develop clear, accurate, persuasive grant narratives grounded in Berean's actual programs, plans, documentation, and needs.

Application preparation

Assemble application materials and ensure that required narrative, financial, institutional, and supporting components are complete and consistent.

Supporting-document coordination

Work with executives and subject-matter specialists to obtain, clarify, and organize the documentation required for specific applications.

Submission tracking

Maintain accurate records of submissions, deadlines, status, follow-up requirements, and related grant activity.

Grant-calendar management

Maintain a working calendar of opportunities, internal preparation deadlines, external due dates, and required follow-up.

Related grant-development work

Support the research, drafting, revision, documentation, and coordination necessary to pursue well-matched grant opportunities effectively.

Role Boundary

Fundraising strategy and grant production are distinct responsibilities.

Grants is a function within Berean's Board-level Fundraising branch. The Grant Writer works within that function under the Fundraising & Development Co-Founder's leadership, providing the specialized grant-development capacity required to execute Berean's broader funding strategy.

Fundraising & Development Co-Founder

Leads Berean's Board-level Fundraising branch and its broader strategy, including grants, donor development, sponsorships, campaigns, fundraising programs, and external funding relationships.

Grant Writer

Performs the specialized research, proposal development, application preparation, documentation coordination, tracking, and grant-calendar work required to pursue appropriate grant opportunities.

The Fundraising Co-Founder determines how grants fit Berean's broader funding strategy. The Grant Writer identifies credible grant matches and develops the applications needed to pursue them.

What You Inherit

You are not being asked to write grants for an idea with nothing behind it.

Berean already has extensive institutional substance for a Grant Writer to examine and work from: curricula, institutional plans, policies, governance documents, technical systems, public initiatives, fundraising research, budgets and plans in development, and substantial supporting documentation.

The challenge is not inventing a case where no genuine funding fit exists. It is understanding a substantial body of existing work, identifying opportunities where Berean credibly aligns with a funder's priorities, and presenting that alignment with the clarity and discipline competitive grant applications require.

Candidate Fit

Berean needs someone who can identify genuine funding fit and present it persuasively.

Strong research and persuasive writing are essential, but this role also requires the judgment to distinguish a credible funding opportunity from a poor fit and the discipline to work accurately from substantial institutional documentation.

Required

  • Demonstrated professional grant-writing competence.
  • Successful proposal-development experience.
  • Strong research, analytical, and persuasive writing ability.
  • Ability to work accurately from complex institutional, programmatic, financial, and governance documentation.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with executives and subject-matter specialists.
  • Strong deadline, documentation, and application-management discipline.

Particularly Valuable

  • Formal grant-writing or grant-development credentials.
  • Experience with nonprofit or educational grant development.
  • Experience researching foundation or institutional funding opportunities.
  • Experience developing proposals that require substantial supporting documentation or cross-functional coordination.

Practical Details

Part-time professional grant work, with the commitment shaped by the opportunity pipeline.

Remote, part-time. Plan for approximately 5–10 hours a week. Proposal deadlines can create short periods of higher demand; any increase is agreed in advance.

Professional-service benchmark
$42.43/hour
Market standard
Berean currently values eligible professional service at approximately the 70th percentile of comparable national U.S. compensation.
Actual compensation
The benchmark represents the professional value of the service performed. Actual compensation is determined through Berean's established nonprofit compensation process based on available uncommitted funds after operating expenses and other obligations have been met.

Early-stage compensation: the $42.43 hourly benchmark should not be read as a guaranteed wage or guaranteed payment schedule. Actual compensation remains dependent on Berean's available funding and financial capacity. Before service begins, your agreement records how the role is lawfully engaged and any guaranteed amount or rate. Any payment dependent on available funds is distinguished from a guaranteed payment, and no provision waives legally required wages or other mandatory protections.

Next Step

Express Interest as Grant Writer.

If your experience fits the role, introduce yourself and the grant work you have performed. The initial submission should include your contact information, résumé or CV, relevant grant-writing and proposal-development experience, and a short statement describing the kinds of grant work you have handled.

Berean will publicly recruit for this role through December 1, 2026. If you discover the opportunity during that period, you do not need to make a rushed decision: Expressions of Interest remain open through January 1, 2027.

An expression of interest begins a professional conversation. It is not an acceptance of the role or a commitment to serve.
