פִּיד m. (פדר; cmp. פְּדַע) 1) picking of chickens. Ab. Zar. 4ᵃ (ref. to פידו, Job XXX, 24) אני נפרע מהן כפ׳ של תרנגולת I will collect from them (punish them) as the chicken picks (in small instalments); ib. אפי׳ אין ישראל … מעט כפ׳ של תרנגולין וכ׳ even if Israel do but small good deeds, as the picking of chickens in the dunghill, I will combine them into one large sum; Yalk. Job 918. —2) (b. h.) (= שֶׁבֶר) misfortune. Pesik. Naḥămu, p. 126ᵇ (ref. to Job l. c.) אין הקב"ה מכה … אלא מביא פ׳ לזו וכ׳ the Lord does not strike a nation and let her sit in despair, but brings misfortune on one and consoles her with another &c.; Yalk.
