A. fixed up to the middle,μεσσοπαγὲς δ' ἄρ' ἔθηκε κατ' ὄχθης μείλινον ἔγχοςdrove it inup to the middle, Il. 21.172 :— Aristarch. preferred thev.l. μεσσοπαλές,quivering up to the middle(cf. Hsch. ); but it is doubtful whether -παλέςcould meanquivering, andμεσσοπαγήςis found in late Poets, as Nonn. D. 1.233 .
